Top Ten Tuesday: My Top Ten Christmas Cartoons

I love and will forever love watching cartoons. I will never outgrow them. I know because I am 27 years old and I still love cartoons and there are just some cartoons that you just never get tired of watching, like holiday cartoons. You watch them every year during this time of the year and it's still as good as the last time you watched it. I love the Christmas season and whenever I watch holiday cartoons, I get nostalgic and I can't help but sport a grin from ear to ear.

So anyway, here are my Top Ten Christmas Cartoons that I would like for my children to see and hopefully love as much as I do.

1. A Charlie Brown Christmas

This is definitely one of my favorites. It centers around what Christmas is all about and teaching kids what is truly behind the holiday, which is Jesus Christ's birth. I'm definitely going to let my kids watch this every year, during this time of the year, starting this year. I want them to learn the true meaning of Christmas.

2. Yogi's First Christmas

I love Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo! In this cartoon, Yogi and Boo Boo skipped hibernation to save everyone else's Christmas and to help a grumpy old hermit and a bratty little kid learn what the holiday season should be about. We watched this today and I am happy that my kids enjoyed it.

3. Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas

I love the cartoon version of this just because of the animation, it has that authentic Dr. Suess feel, however, the film was good too. I just can't imagine that the social climbing bitch, Jenny Humphrey was once Cindy Lou Who, Taylor Momsen is no longer cute.

4. Nightmare Before Christmas

I love Tim Burton, I think he was a genius. I love this cartoon movie. I remember once in high school I suggested we do like a Nightmare Before Christmas kind of theme for our classroom Christmas decorations and everyone said I had a disturbed mind. Yeah, whatever. They obviously just don't understand the genius of Tim Burton. Oh well, they ended up decorating it the old fashioned cliche way, complete with fake snow made of soap, even though everyone knows that we are in a tropical country and it doesn't snow here.

5. Mikey's Christmas Carol

Definitely one of the most awesome stories about having the true meaning of Christmas, played by Mikey Mouse and his gang. If this doesn't put you in a good mood, then I guess you're a worst person than Ebenezer Scrooge.

6. The Nutcracker Prince

Based on the story by E.T.A. Hoffman, The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. It is also a ballet adaptation and when I was still dancing, we did an adaptation of it too, to Tchaikovsky's music and it has always been one of my favorite productions. Barbie has her version of this cartoon movie too, and that's what my kids have seen and they seem to like it as well. Definitely a favorite.

7. Tom and Jerry's version of The Night Before Christmas

I love Tom and Jerry! And I love their version of this classic poem.

8. Christmas Comes But Once A Year (1936)

Apparently during those times, the real Santa Claus gives crappy toys that break so damn easily, but thanks to Professor Grampy, the inventor, he manages to give the orphans a great Christmas by inventing toys out of kitchen supplies and stuff and even decorated the house. It makes no sense at all, but it's fun to watch.

9. Peace on Earth (1939)

Mankind extinct and animals live in a land of peace. Let Grandpa Squirrel tell you the story of how war destroyed mankind and how they come to live in peace with the help of a rule book (the bible) that men did not follow very well.

10. Twas the Night Before Christmas (1974)

An adaptation of the poem entitled, A Visit from St. Nicholas written by Clement Clark Moore in 1823. The first poem to ever describe how Santa Claus looked like as well as how he traveled on his sleigh pulled by 8 reindeer.

When I was in high school, I always watched Cow and Chicken. I didn't enjoy it then because I thought it was just a freaky cartoon and I didn't understand what was so darn funny about it. I mean except for the fact that a cow and a chicken are somehow kids of half-bodied people, from the waist down, I didn't really think it was all that funny. I only watched it to pass the time without really paying attention to it.

So anyway, a few weeks back, when my sister, Joy was in town, we watched an episode in the wee hours of the morning, it aired around 4 a.m. on Cartoon Network and since there was nothing else on tv, we watched it and we laughed our asses off so hard our stomach hurt.

I finally understood what was so darn funny. I finally get their jokes. And I can finally appreciate the nonsense-just-for-fun theme the cartoon had going on. I can't get over the fact that Cow would constantly make this cow sound and how Chicken's accent is weirdly hilarious. I laughed out loud at their cousin whom they call Boneless Chicken, because that's just what he is, boneless. LOL. I remember one time they used Boneless as a kite and another as a frisbee and he'd constantly get stuck on the roof.


Also, the villain, whose supposedly a devil, named red, has his butt exposed, one time, he taped his legs to his butt because he was pretending to be a peg-legged pirate. LOL. He constantly tries to get Cow and Chicken into trouble just for the hell of it. However, thanks to Super Cow, Cow's alter ego, his plans fail and he ends up getting hurt in the end with Cow and Chicken reuniting with their parents. Super Cow only speaks Spanish and she uses her udder as a weapon. LOL.

Joy used to screw up the words to the theme song, she'd go, "..and a chigichigi bow" instead of "and he didn't care how". LMAO.

Listening to the theme song makes me laugh out loud because it brings back the memory of that time when my sister, Joy and I watched it together. Good times, good times.

For an adult, Cow and Chicken isn't that bad at all, it is hilarious and I am seriously thinking of downloading some of the episodes on my iPod, just for the hell of it.

I Remember: Totoro**

When I was a kid, I saw this cartoon and I never forgot it. It was called My Neighbor Totoro, it is a Japanese Anime film, back then Japanese Animes were famous. I don't know if you know him, but I really loved him.


The Setting: 1958, Rural Japan

The Characters:
Satsuki -- the older sister
Mei -- the youngest sister
Totoro -- the Keeper of the Forest
The catbus
Soot Spirits -- small house spirits seen when moving from light to dark places, but they leave when the girls become comfortable in their new house and laugh with their father. They look like dust bunnies with eyes, so cute!

So the story begins when Satsuki and Mei's mother became ill and they moved to a house closer to the hospital where she was confined and there they discovered all sorts of magical creatures living in their house and in the forest. One day, Mei when was playing outside, she saw what looked like 2 rabbit ears, only it turned out not to be a rabbit but a small see through kinda creature and so she followed it under their house, she didn't know what it was, she was too happy when she saw a bigger version of it appear, she called that bigger version "Totoro", although it said in the original Japanese dub, the word "totoro" stemmed from Mei's mispronunciation of the word "troll". Their father tells her later on that Totoro is the Keeper of the Forest.

One rainy night while waiting for their father's bus to arrive at the bus stop, Mei was at Satsuki's back, asleep, Totoro appeared beside them with only a large leaf covering his head, this is the first time Satsuki actually meets Totoro, she gives him an umbrella and he loves it, in turn he gives them something wrapped in leaves, which turned out to be seeds and some nuts, and then he boards the Catbus. That is my fave part, check out the video. I couldn't find one in English, I think the one is in French, but you get what they're saying.



I wish I could find a DVD of this somewhere because I'd want to watch it again and maybe let my kids watch it too.

Anyway, here's the theme song, I don't know Japanese, maybe I should ask my dad to translate, but the tune is catchy and I can't get the chorus out of my head. LOL.
