A Short Lived Hurrah for Hackers

Last month, a web guru came up with a Firefox extension that has gotten people excited and worried all at the same time. He called it Firesheep and its main purpose is to be able to collect cookies from computers that is on a local network connection, such as wifi areas and then steal passwords. His intentions weren't malicious, he just wanted to let people know that it can be done.

Personally, when I read about it, I got scared because I am very active online and practically my entire life is on the internet. I work online and I earn a little from blogging, and the thought that someone can steal my usernames and passwords really scared me. I have bad memory and it's hard for me to keep track of all my usernames and passwords, so I do have a keylogger, and the thought that someone can access it over a wifi network is a terrifying thought.

I bet some people, I mean hackers, had a field day with that Firefox add on and I am sure that some people used it maliciously, either to spy on a loved one's ex or steal information from someone. Good thing that add on did not stay live for very long as it was taken off of the web almost immediately after it came out, so no need to fret.

However, it is still better to take extra precaution when you are in an unsecured local network such as wifi hot spots, because you never know who is taking a peek at your online activities. As much as possible, keep away from sites that you think may have valuable information that hackers can use to steal your identity or use it to your disadvantage. If you have really valuable information you want to keep better, then arm your pc with a good software that can detect any kind of spyware. Prevention is always better than cure. In this technology driven world, you never know who might be taking a peek at your information online.
