Shutter (American Version 2008)*

Okay, it's been so long since I wanted to write about this movie, but I was freaked out so badly I couldn't write it alone.jelir I couldn't get myself to google photos of the movie which I would post here because I know it would scare the hell out of me.jelir I love scary movies, but I am also a scaredy cat.jelir B wonders why I love watching scary movies in the first place, but there's just something about horror movies that makes me want to watch them. Maybe it's the adrenaline rush I get from being freaked out so badly. OR Did you know that sex can be better and more likely to occur when you're freaked out? LOL.gelakguling Yeah, I read that in an old issue of a magazine, I think it was on Cosmopolitan or something like that, it said that watching scary movies will up your chances of getting laid rather than if you see a romantic comedy or a romance film. Apparently, there's something in our brains that make us want to do it when we're scared.sengihnampakgigi No wonder in horror movies, characters find the time to do it, despite impending danger, well, at least they die happy.sengihnampakgigi LOL.gelakguling I know, it's crazy, but hey, don't take my word for it, it just might be me.jelir LOL.gelakguling

So anyway, on to Shutter.

I am told that the original Thai version of the movie is much scarier than the American version, and I do believe that because Asians can make one hell of a scary movie, no question about that. For those of you who don't know, Shutter is a remake of the Thai film of the same title made in 2004. I don't want to watch the Thai version because it's Asian and come on, I am Asian, it happens closer to home, it would freak me out even more because it happened on the same continent from where I am.jelir

Okay okay, on to Shutter, for real.

Shutter stars Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek, Urban Legend, Cruel Intentions) and Rachael Taylor (See No Evil, Transformers, Cedar Boys) and Megumi Okina (as Rika Nishina on Ju On a.k.a. The Grudge, Japanese Version).

Take a look at the movie's trailer:

SPOILER ALERT: Please don't read any further if you haven't watched the movie.
It follows the lives of 2 newlyweds who moved to Japan because Benjamin Shaw (Jackson) has a job there as a photographer. While driving on a dark road, Jane (Taylor) thought she saw a woman on the road appear out of nowhere, so she stepped on the brakes but still she run over the woman before they skidded off the road and hit a tree. When they regained consciousness, Jane went hysterical and told Benjamin she hit someone, they frantically ran up the road in search of the woman, but there was no sign of a woman anywhere. Japanese officials arrived on the scene and even they can't find a woman's body. Jane wasn't convinced, she felt that she may have possibly killed someone.

They arrived on a cabin where they were to spend a few days to celebrate their marriage, and Benjamin being a photographer, of course they took a lot of photos. After the accident, Benjamin had a nagging neck pain that wouldn't go away. He thought he might have sprained it during the accident, but when he got it checked the doctor said that he was fine and that there wasn't anything wrong with his neck. Benjamin began his job as a photographer while Jane explored the city of Japan, she had kind of like a lost in translation moment. When she got home, she was pleased to find that their wedding photos have arrived straight from the States, but then she was disappointed when she found that most of them were damaged and had like a light smeared on them, most of the pictures had a white glare over Benjamin's photo, if not beside him, she didn't think any of it, until Seiko (Benjamin's Japanese assistant) told her about Spirit Photos. Spirit Photos, she asked, what is that? So Seiko took her to a local magazine's office that publishes and specializes in Spirit Photography, where she learned about Spirits/Ghosts that roam and haunt those that they cannot leave behind. Of course at first she was skeptical because she saw a guy on a computer adding so called "spirits" on a photo, but then she was taken to a room with salt by the foot of the door and inside were hundreds of pictures, which the editor claimed were real. She was pretty freaked out by then, that was also the second time the woman she ran over the road made an appearance before her. So weird freaky things happen to both her and Benjamin from then on. All that time, she thought it was because she ran her over on the road. Until she saw a photo of Benjamin and the girl together in his office, so she makes him tell her what the hell his connection was to her. He tells her that her name is Megumi Tanaka, she was an ex girlfriend, who became clingy and then he had to ask for his friends' help so that he could break up with her, which he said they did, and then he never saw her again, and then he met Jane and everything as they say is history. She was convinced and tried to figure out what the ghost wanted from them, so they looked for her, and sure enough, they found her, what was left of her anyway. Due to her depression when Benjamin left her, she killed herself and the mother never had the heart to bury her so she just kept her in her room, rotting away on a rocking chair. They had her buried and they thought it was all over. While this was happening, Benjamin's friends die horribly. One died because the camera lens shattered in his eye, the other one went bonkers and jumped off a balcony. Benjamin and Jane then decide that Japan was not for them, so they go back to the states. Just when they thought it was over, it wasn't. While Jane was waiting for Benjamin to come home, she came across a couple of photos during their wedding and realized that the glare on their photos wasn't just a white glare, it was Megumi, clinging to Benjamin. She was there even before they moved to Japan. She flipped the pictures in her hand and she saw a series of actions by Megumi pointing to a portrait of Jane on the wall. She looks at the wall and then examines the picture, nothing wrong with it. She examined the room next to the photo, and there she saw a suitcase marked Japan. She saw an old camera and decided to take a look at the photos on the memory card. What she saw shocked her. It contained pictures of Megumi, being handled by Benjamin's friends, obviously drugged or intoxicated. Benjamin comes home and she confronts him and asked him what really happened. So he tells her, he claimed that they were just going to take revealing pictures of her and blackmail her into leaving him alone, but it seems that Benjamin's friends had other plans, he swore he never touched her, he just took the pictures and then left. Apparently, that was why Megumi killed herself, she was not only dumped but she was raped by Benjamin's friends. Jane then thought that Megumi wasn't trying to hurt her, she was trying to warn her of what kind of man she was with. So Jane leaves Benjamin. Benjamin in a rage grabbed his Polaroid camera and starts shooting random pictures of the room, screaming for Megumi to show herself and that she wanted happened, Jane has left him. He throws the camera and it takes a picture of him. He picks up the camera and what he saw freaked him out. Megumi was sitting on his shoulders. That is why he's been having terrible neck pains, which even the doctor couldn't figure out. He then tries to shake her off, knowing that he can't he decides to electrocute himself. Smart move. He ends up on a hospital as a vegetable, and guess what, Megumi is still with him, hunched over his back.
Pretty freaking movie if you ask me!hah OMG!hah I was so freaked out, every time I feel some kind of neck pain, I think somebody is sitting on me!!hah LOL...gelakguling Pretty silly of me, I know, but I can't help but be freaked out. If you're looking for a scare, I suggest you watch this. See you in the movies!encem

Have you had any shutter experiences?

I have 2. Both using nokia phones. The funny thing, just b4 i pressed that shutter button, i had this sudden rush of feeling, my heart beat when suddenly fast like after running a 100m dash for few seconds.

Well, anyway, that s how it always happens prior to me seeing things. hehe. Owh i hate seeing things. People say you are blessed since a portion of your sightings allow you to see such thing. Bless or what, i just dont like to see things. Haha

No Rizal!! thank god!! I would surely be freaked out if I did!! OMG! Your
third eye is open?? I don't think I'd be able to handle it if mine were too!
yeah, in a way you're lucky to have an open third eye... and you're pretty
brave too! Do you see like scary stuff? or mostly friendly ones??

hey Marzie, Rizal was fast eh? :)

Sometimes, i freaked out too, especially if the unpleasant ones showed up. LoL!!

Most are just passerby (not sure friendly or not) but i believe that we happen to be on the same space as they are. These passerby are just like checking or intriguing by our presences. Tee hee.

I realize that i started seeing one at the age of 7 until now.

Though i like to watch scary movies but yeah, i seldom watch at wee hours in the early morning. hehe
