Gadgets and a Movie*

The other day, B and I and the kids went to the mall and looked through some of the electronics showcased there. Most of the items were cell phones, tv's, sound systems, laptops, game consoles like PS3 and Wii and the like. I love going through stuff like these, it's like eye candy for me.lapar B of course went straight to the tv section, he has been wanting to get a slim lcd kind of tv for the longest time. He didn't get one right there and then, but who knows, maybe he can finally get one mid-August. I had a chance to see the new VAIO P, it's a laptop/notebook that can actually fit in your pocket. It's nice and all, but it's still a bit too small for me, maybe if I am a millionaire I'd get one just for the sake of having one kenyit, but for now, I'll stick to 14.1" laptops. B told me that he's finally going to get me that Sony VAIO I've been wanting for the longest time sengihnampakgigi, remember?soal The red one? I wrote about it here. Well, anyway, YAY!sengihnampakgigi But I won't get it until August or early September, but that's okay, I can wait!sengihnampakgigi The main thing is that I am going to get it!sengihnampakgigi WooHoo!sengihnampakgigi

So anyway, while we were browsing through all the wonderful gadgets and stuff, a movie that was playing in one of the HDTV's caught B's attention, and mine too. Aside from the awesome action scene, the story line was intriguing. B asked the man for the title of the film and he said it was "APOCALYPTO". So, we went to Astro Vision, where we always buy our cd/dvd/vcd's, all original of course, we don't support piracy, and we bought a copy of Apocalypto and a few others.

It turns out "Apocalypto" is a film by Mel Gibson, which would explain the very realistic wounds inflicted to the characters, and the subtitles. I love the movie. It was one of the best movies, I've seen so far. I don't think Mel Gibson is given enough credit for his directorial capabilities, he should because the man can sure direct.sembah The movie was awesome!tepuktangan

Check out the trailer of the movie:

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched this movie and are planning to watch it, I suggest you stop reading and go straight to leaving me comments because the next few paragraphs contain scenes and stuff from the movie.

Okay, here we go.
The setting, somewhere in Central America, pre-civilization, where tribes mostly inhabit the place and foraging, hunting and fishing are still the ways of life. The characters, Jaguar Paw, the hero, his father, Flint Sky, his pregnant wife, Seven, his son, Turtles Run, his tribe mates and the invaders.

Where it all began: Jaguar Paw, with his father and friends are hunting in the forest. While they were cutting their catch of the day into pieces, Jaguar Paw heard something and spoke to the forest, asking them what they wanted, and sure enough there were people there. The people looked scared, and told them that they were just passing through and since it was Jaguar Paw's tribe's territory they had to ask for their permission, which Jaguar Paw's father gave them permission in exchange for a few pieces of really big fish. When Jaguar Paw asked them why they needed to pass through, the man said that their village was ravaged and that they seek a new beginning, which aroused both fear and curiosity in Jaguar Paw, but his father wouldn't let him ask the man any questions and told him to be still, so he obeyed his father and let it go. Seeing the man and what was left of the man's village bothered Jaguar Paw deeply and his father knew. Before going back to the village Jaguar Paw's father told the men not to tell anybody else about their encounter in the forest with anybody else, and that was that. Jaguar Paw, however, was worried, and so his father spoke to him. Jaguar Paw's father asked him what he saw in those people they saw in the forest, the answer was fear. Fear, his father said, is like a sickness, it slowly creeps up on you and before you know it, it engulfs your entire being. He told Jaguar Paw not to be afraid and to believe that everything happens for a reason and that everything will turn out okay. Jaguar Paw was still not satisfied and so as if to pacify him, his father told him that in the morning they will discuss what they saw in the forest with the elders and that was that. That night, they had a normal feast, there were dancing and food over a bonfire.

That morning, Jaguar Paw awoke because he saw the man in the forest in his dream, warning him to run because the invaders were coming. Good thing he woke up, because true enough, the invaders were quietly sneaking up on their village. He quickly gathered his pregnant wife and his son and hid them in an empty well. Just in time, for chaos has befallen their village. Everybody was screaming and there was blood all around, men were tied up and women were raped and tied up as well, while children were left alone. At least the invaders had some decency to leave the children alone.

The invaders brought the men and women with them leaving all the children behind, Jaguar Paw's family still safely hidden in the empty well. Jaguar Paw was also captured and his father was killed in front of him, but his last words were, "don't be afraid, my son", something to that effect. On the way to where the invaders were taking them, they came across a little girl who was believed to be an oracle and she foretold of the invaders' end when a night comes in the day, a man will come to end their world, he will run with the jaguar and he will be reborn from the mud.

The invaders brought the captives to the Mayan City, where the women were sold as slaves and the men were sacrificed to their god, because they believed that the Earth craved blood and crops would only grow if they sacrificed men.

The priest would stab the man in the heart and rip his heart out, and cut off his head and let it bounce of the stairs and then throw his body off as well. A bit morbid if you ask me, and gory too. Terrifying in that sense. When it was Jaguar Paw's turn a solar eclipse happened and to the people that was a sign that the Earth's thirst for blood was quenched and so Jaguar Paw was safe.

Then as if in a game, the captives were made to run across a field, freedom being at the end of the field, they were free if they can manage to get across while the invaders shoot them with arrows, rocks and spears. Jaguar Paw was hit with a spear on his side but still alive, when the son of the leader's invaders were about to finish him off, Jaguar paw slit his throat with the end of the spear and Jaguar Paw is able to reach the end of the field, run across an open mass grave, probably former captives that didn't make it and then finally into the forest.

He managed to climb a tree and lose the 6 invaders after him. But as he was resting and tending to his wound, he saw a baby jaguar on the tree and the mother right behind him and so he was in the run again, this time from the jaguar. Meanwhile, the invaders are still out looking for him and then they saw him running and so they run after him, not knowing that a jaguar was behind him, the guy tries to cut him off but ends up being killed by the jaguar, and while the guy is being mauled to death by the jaguar he manages to escape, and then he jumps off a waterfall. But the invaders follow him, 2 of the invaders die by hitting their head on the rocks below the waterfall. He leads one of the men to a trap meant for hunting tapir and the man dies of spear to his body. The chase is still on as 2 of the men are still after them, he runs towards the beach, where they see ships, where men are coming up on shore in boats, the 2 invaders are distracted by these which gave Jaguar Paw time to escape, and so he managed to save his 2 sons and his wife, his wife gave birth in the well, just as it was filling with water because it rained. So anyway, the movie ends with Jaguar Paw and his family overlooking the beach, where the civilized men were, had a dialogue about what will happen now, and jaguar Paw's answer was that they are going deep in the forest and seek a new beginning.

I loved the movie because it was action packed but it wasn't boring. I think the subtitles made it pre-civilization genuine. You know what I mean?soal Mel Gibson is awesome!tepuktangan I am looking forward to his next movie. I'm betting it's going to be better than this one, I can't wait.senyum
